We aren’t suggesting that these activists don’t care about health, climate change, or the rights of immigrants. Want to be healthier? Go vegan! Want to reduce your carbon footprint? Go vegan! Want to distance yourself from industries that exploit undocumented immigrants? Go vegan! Indirect activism involves arguing that some cause that’s indirectly related to the activist’s primary agenda provides reasons to act in ways that are congruent with that agenda. It’s also bad news for those who want an animal-friendly food system.īecause the public isn’t very concerned about the plight of animals-or is concerned, but has a high tolerance for cognitive dissonance-animal activists regularly engage in indirect activism. This may be good news for those in the industry, but it’s bad news for billions of animals. ![]() As a result, many predict that rising demand will drive up global production by roughly 50% over the next 30 years, and some estimates are higher (Alexandratos and Bruinsma 2012). At a global level, this is due to a combination of population growth and rising incomes (as income is correlated with demand for animal products) (Kearney 2010). All signs indicate that it will continue to grow in the future. Unfortunately, though, intensive animal agriculture has grown rapidly over the last century. In the short run, then, there are good arguments for increasing both the regulation and oversight of intensive systems in the long run, there are good arguments for scaling them back and, in their place, encouraging plant-based food production. Additionally, and of particular note here, intensive systems have long imposed substantial burdens on nonhuman animals. Intensive systems are subject to familiar objections concerning their impacts on the environment, workers, and public health. There were excellent reasons to reform intensive animal agriculture prior to COVID-19. Additionally, in the case of arguments against wet markets specifically, we contend that the precautionary argument can be supplemented with a side constraint condition that, arguably, activists violated insofar as they were acting in ways that maintain a racist and xenophobic system. In both cases, we think there are plausible precautionary arguments against the strategies that these activists pursued. We then assess the moral significance of this risk, concluding that while it may have been permissible to advance these arguments, there were some serious moral considerations against doing so-ones that weren’t addressed by flagging animal activists’ concern for animals or any other stakeholder in the discussion. We contend that both arguments had the risk of backfiring: they risked promoting the very systems that are worst for animals. In this paper, we consider the two indirect arguments that animal activists advanced in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic: first, some used COVID-19 to criticize intensive animal agriculture-many of these had US-based audiences as their target second, and more modestly, some activists used COVID-19 to condemn wet markets specifically. ![]() Because the public isn’t very concerned about the plight of animals-or is concerned, but has a high tolerance for cognitive dissonance-animal activists regularly engage in indirect activism. If you want to spend hours hitting the flippers and bumping the machine strategically without tilting, here are some of the best places to play pinball in the USA, “pinball museums” where you can hit the flippers until your arms cramp up. At any of them, at least one machine will probably be out of order at any given time. ![]() Now, in most of the spots listed in this pinball places article, there’s a full-time person on site keeping the machines rolling. In the old days there were roving technicians who spent all day making repairs, traveling from bar to arcade to pool hall. Pinball machines take up more room than most (but not all) video games, plus they are much more complicated machines. It wasn’t just changing tastes that led to a decline though. (See more about that in Sheila’s post on the National Videogame Museum.) They just don’t do the huge sales numbers they used to back in the days before Pac-man, Asteroids, Centipede, and Donkey Kong started taking their place. Pinball is not a dead form of entertainment: new machines are still coming out all the time, like that one pictured here that I just spotted in a local brewpub in Tampa Bay. Most of them are tagged as pinball museums, but they’re arcades where you can actually play with the exhibits. Are you a budding pinball wizard or are you an oldster like me who prefers the tactile feel of those machines over the bits and bytes of video games? Early Explorers’ Shelter on Jackson Island 5. Seeing sites like this and hearing from the expedition team, the stories of these early polar explorers really gives you an appreciation for what these explorers went through. There is also Jackson Island where Nansen and Johansen (two explorers who had attempted to reach the North Pole) were forced to spend a winter in total darkness in a makeshift shelter from nearby rocks, a piece of driftwood and hunting walrus and polar bears to survive. Historical Significanceįranz Josef Land is one of the most northerly land masses on Earth, which made it a popular spot to make a base for expeditions trying to be the first to reach the North Pole! With a bit of luck with the conditions, you will get a chance to explore some of these sites such as Tikhaya Bay, which is an abandoned Soviet polar station including generator, hanger and dog kennels – making it a fascinating place to wander around. It’s great to get off the ship and onto the landings sites, to do the zodiac cruises along the face of the glacier and around the icebergs, but with a small ship you are so close to it all you can also enjoy it from the warmth of the ship with a coffee in hand. Whether it’s a glacier front stretching for kilometres or the tabular icebergs it creates, it’s really hard to describe how beautiful the region is. The archipelago is 85% glaciers which makes for some spectacular scenery unlike even other polar regions. This far north even the satellite internet doesn’t work, so you will have to go without the wi-fi and really explore this destination. This means that the cruises that visit now may still land at completely new landing sites that have no record of being explored in the past. Even with the increased interest in the polar regions (40,000+ visitors to Antarctica each year), Franz Josef Land has remained largely unexplored with roughly only 1000 visitors every year. Not to worry though – during the summer period when the expeditions run, the temperature averages a balmy couple of degrees above 0C. At times the temperature reaches lower than -40C and in winter total darkness engulfs the island for several months. ![]() UndiscoveredĮven in the middle of summer sea ice can make exploring parts of Franz Josef land impossible, and in winter the archipelago is totally surrounded by ice, making it one of the least hospitable areas on earth – so its not surprising that it has never been permanently settled. To reach Franz Josef Land requires you to fly to Longyearbyen – the most northern airport in the world that operates scheduled flights (quite the journey when travelling from Australia) and then sail for around two days before passing through a Russian checkpoint, after which you are finally ready to explore! Remote Wilderness 2. A part of what makes Franz Josef Land special is indeed how hard it is to get to. In the era of low-cost airlines, Instagram and package holidays it’s increasingly difficult to get away from the crowds and explore somewhere new. These are my top reasons you should add Franz Josef Land to your travel bucket list. If you haven’t heard of it before, it is a Russian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean which is inhabited only by military personnel and spectacular wildlife. ![]() I recently had the opportunity to visit Franz Josef Land on board the Sea Spirit. ![]() ![]() The Division Heartland is given a very vague "coming soon" tease instead of an actual release date, though that status might change with Ubisoft Forward around the corner. ![]() Ubisoft are hoping that The Division Heartland, which is being made in parallel to new The Division 2 content, will be the key to expanding The Division ‘s player base.
